Scaffolding accidents
Construction work in the UK is seen on a daily basis so scaffolding is a very common sight when there is renovation work or extensions being built. But because so many workers are using scaffolding their lives could be in danger if the right safety precautions haven’t been put in place. Scaffolding that has not been constructed or designed properly is a working hazard and sadly many workers have lost their life because of this.
Employers who do not follow health and safety guidelines, in particular work at height regulations, not only put workers lives at risk but also the lives of the general public too. Scaffolding that has not been erected properly can collapse and injure those working on it and anyone that happens to be near the scaffolding.
A press release was published in 2009 by the HSE warning companies of the need to ensure scaffolding is secure, safe and correctly erected. The press release came after the HSE prosecuted two businesses in Wales following a serious incident with scaffolding.
Every company that uses scaffolding must follow the regulations and guidelines set out by the HSE who have a Scaffold Checklist Guide for businesses to use. This will show them what is required and the training and skills that are needed by those who will be erecting any scaffolding.
Falling from scaffolding or any height can cause serious injuries and sometimes death. If you have fell from scaffolding or a height at work and this was due to unsafe equipment, lack of training or no safety equipment being used you may be able to claim compensation.
