Food Poisoning Compensation
Bacterial food poisoning can make you very ill, and in severe cases can sometimes be fatal. It is caused through food that has not been stored, handled, prepared or cooked properly.
There are many different types of bacterial infection which include salmonella, listeria, e-coli and clostridia.
As food is eaten in many different places anyone that gets food poisoning could do so in a wide variety of environments such as:
- Restaurant
- On board an aircraft or cruise ship
- From a product purchased
- On holiday
- At work
Some of the symptoms of food poisoning include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- High temperature
- Nausea
- Shivering
As there are other illnesses that can cause these symptoms it is important to see a doctor and be correctly diagnosed.
Sometimes tracing the source of food poisoning can be difficult as the symptoms don’t always show the same day the contaminated food has been eaten, sometimes it can be two or three days later.
If you think you may be suffering from food poisoning you should visit a doctor straight away and inform him of what you have eaten and where. He may take stool samples, but if it is food poisoning involving a product bought or eaten outside of the home the doctor should inform the environmental health dept who will then carry out an inspection and try and find out if any others have been infected.
The Food Safety Act 1990 was launched to protect consumers from anyone selling food that used negligent practice. Therefore if you have become ill due to a business not following these guidelines you may be able to make a claim for compensation.
