Holiday Road Accidents
When people go on holiday many hire a car to get out and about, some choose to hire a bicycle to explore resorts, others rely on public transport or organised coach tours. Most people on holiday will want to see as much as they can and will get out and about quite safely. Unfortunately road accidents are as common abroad as they are here in the UK and if you are involved in a road accident whilst abroad you may be able to claim compensation. It doesn’t matter whether you were the driver, the passenger or a pedestrian, if you suffer an injury through a road accident you may be able to make a claim.
To claim compensation following a road accident it must be proved that a driver was at fault. In some countries, France being one of them, cyclists, pedestrians and passengers have an automatic right to claim injury damages, even if nobody is at fault.
If you are involved in a road accident abroad here are some important guidelines to follow:
- Say at the scene of the accident until the police have arrived
- Do not sign anything unless you understand and agree to what you are signing
- Understandably many people panic as they don’t understand what is happening because of language barriers. If this happens to you make sure you ask for an interpreter as you are legally entitled to do so
- Make sure you are seen by a doctor either at the scene of the accident or at a hospital following the accident
- Make sure you get a copy of the medical notes relating to your injuries, ask for this to be written in English if possible. If this isn’t possible you should ask for the notes to be translated before signing anything
- Obtain details of all other persons involved in the accident
