Asbestos Diseases

There has been a lot of publicity regarding the dangers of asbestos and the diseases that can be caused with exposure to this deadly building material. Up until the 1970’s it was used quite commonly in building and construction. Although asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 it is still present in millions of residential properties.

When it is dangerous?

It becomes dangerous when it is released into the air and breathed in. This puts certain people at more risk than others:

  • People who work in the construction or engineering industry can be at risk as they may possibly disturb asbestos when working on property.
  • Home improvements or burst pipes may also cause asbestos to be released into the atmosphere which is when there is a risk of people breathing it in, so anyone doing DIY in a house with it in could be at risk.

What diseases does it cause?

One of the main diseases caused by the inhalation of asbestos is asbestosis. This scars the lung tissue, caused fluid on the lungs, lung cancer and cancer in the chest, also known as mesothelioma.

There is no known cure or treatment that can change the progression of this disease.

What are the Symptoms of Asbestosis and Related Diseases?
It can take more than 20 years for an asbestos related disease to show itself as they develop slowly. The symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest Pain
  • Dry and/or persistent Cough

How to claim
