Industrial Dermatitis

Occupational, or industrial dermatitis as it is also known is caused by the skin coming into contact with irritants such as chemicals, oils, creams and other substances used at work. Sometimes even protective clothing such as latex gloves can cause the skin problem. Dermatitis can vary in condition ranging from symptoms such as flaky, itchy skin to severe sore, red and inflamed skin.

All employers have a duty to protect their workers from injury and disease. Under the following regulations, MHSW and COSHH, employers are legally required to assess any risks that may cause occupational dermatitis. The must prevent employees coming into contact with substances that could cause this disease. If a substance is identified as hazardous then a more suitable substance should be used. If however it cannot be substituted then employers must provide protective clothing and limited use of the substances. In addition to this there must be areas the employees can wash and dry that are close to the work areas.

The two most common types of occupational or industrial dermatitis are:

Allergic contact dermatitis- This comes about because of how sensitive an individual is to substances which are also allergens. Sometimes it can happen after just one exposure to the substance. However it is difficult to control once it has developed.

Irritant contact dermatitis- This is a result of skin cell damage after exposure to a particular substance.

Usually the first symptoms are a red rash which will itch and sometimes burn. Irritant contact dermatitis tends to be more painful however. It can take up to a month to clear completely.

Usually these conditions are treated with steroid creams and through the use of soap substitutes but doctors will prescribe according to how severe the dermatitis is.
