Farmers Lung Disease

Farmer’s lung is caused by exposure to mould and spores mainly found in hay, straw and crops such as grain or corn. An allergic reaction to these spores can lead to long term breathing problems which will affect the ability of the sufferer to work and his or her quality of life.

If you are at risk of exposure to substances which may cause farmer’s lung, your employer has a legal obligation to provide you with safety equipment.

If you have been diagnosed with farmer’s lung disease you may be eligible to make an industrial disease claim. For a free consultation or to start your claim, contact Precision Claims on 0844 704 1945, or enquire online and we will call you back.

Causes and symptoms of Farmer’s Lung Disease

You are at risk of developing farmer’s lung disease if you:

  • Work in fields or dusty barns
  • Have regular exposure to animal fur, feathers or droppings
  • Have regular contact with horses or livestock
  • Work with grain or other feedstuffs
  • Handle straw or hay
  • Work with solvents

Farmers lung causes chest problems and breathing difficulties. Initial symptoms usually occur within 4-8 hours of exposure and are often mistaken for cold, flu, pneumonia or asthma. They include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Physical weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headaches

If not treated and if exposure continues these problems will get worse and become permanent.

If the disease is recognised early enough and exposure to the spores is stopped, the symptoms can be treated and the lungs may recover over a period of time.

If you work on a farm or in an industry that exposes you to any of the things above your employer should be aware of the risks. There are COSHH regulations he should be following which are there to protect employees from hazardous substances at work.

If you have suffered from farmers lung you may be able to make a claim for compensation. Call the team at Precision Claims on 0844 704 1945, or enquire online and we will call you back.
