What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a disease caused by exposure to asbestos where a cancerous tumour grows on the sac lining the internal body cavities. The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma which starts in the chest, in the pleura that surrounds the outer lining of the lungs. The other type is peritoneal mesothelioma which starts in the abdominal cavity.
Diagnosing the disease in the early stages is difficult as symptoms can be none specific. Pleural mesothelioma symptoms can be similar to viral pneumonia and include chest pain, persistent cough and shortness of breath. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can include weight loss, nausea, swelling of the stomach and anaemia.
Mesothelioma doesn't normally develop until between 30 and 40 years after the exposure to asbestos. For that reason, many people who were exposed while working in in construction during the 1960’s-1980’s have been struck down with the disease but are only just now experiencing symptoms. In addition, family members of people who were exposed may also develop mesothelioma if asbestos fibres were carried back into the home on their loved one’s clothing.
