Accident checklist

Whenever you are involved in an accident there are things you should always do, even if you only suffer minor injuries. Sometimes the trauma of the incident can cause shock and stress some days after the accident and trying to remember details then will be much harder. Wherever possible try and follow as many of these guidelines at the time of the accident:

  • Take the contact details of all witnesses to the accident
  • If you have a mobile phone with you try and take photos of the accident scene
  • Write as much information down as you can, time, location anything going on etc
  • If the accident happens on business premises or in a public place make sure the accident is recorded in an accident book. Only sign this if what is written down is correct, always get a copy
  • Ensure you get medical attention either at your GP surgery or local hospital. Ensure your injuries are recorded correctly
  • Make sure you keep a full record of any expenses incurred as a result of the accident. These may include the cost of medication, replacing damaged items, transport, treatment etc
  • Take photos of any swelling, bruising, cuts or scarring you have as a result of the accident

Doing all the above will probably be the last thing on your mind after being involved in an accident. If you have a family member or friend with you that isn’t injured ask if they can do this for you as having the above information will make your claim so much easier.
