Taxi Accidents
Thousands of people in the UK use taxis every day and most taxi drivers are very experienced careful drivers. However, taxi accidents do happen regularly. Often when there is a road traffic accident that involves a taxi there are one or more passengers in the taxi who may have sustained injuries.
Unless you contributed to the cause of the accident, as a passenger you will be viewed as an innocent party and be able to make a claim for compensation.
At the scene of the accident, and if you are able to you should:
- Get the name and address of the taxi driver along with the name, address and tel number of the taxi firm. Get the taxi registration number also
- Take the name and address of any other drivers involved plus their registration numbers
- Names and addresses of any witnesses
- If you have a camera or camera on your phone take photos of the road accident scene if at all possible
Making a claim for compensation will be more straightforward if these steps are taken. Tracking down witnesses after an event can be difficult, and exact details of where cars were positioned is hard to remember or could be disputed so following the steps above will help in the claim process.
The amount of compensation to which you are entitled could be reduced if you were not wearing a seatbelt. As the law states you must wear a seatbelt when travelling in a taxi. Even if you were not wearing a seatbelt, it is worth making a claim as you will still be eligible for the majority of your compensation.
