Winter Accidents
During the winter there are many accidents caused by wet, windy, snowy and icy weather.
Road traffic accidents tend to increase in the winter caused by things such as:
- Skidding on ice and snow
- Heavy rainfall and sleet causing poor visibility
- Freezing weather causing potholes
- High winds blowing branches and other obstacles into the road
- Bleak conditions cause collisions with cyclists when the light is dim
- Driving in darker weather causes tiredness making drivers less alert
Slips and falls happen frequently in:
- Supermarkets and shopping centres with wet floors
- Business entrances where there is lots of foot traffic have not been gritted or cleared of snow
- Workplaces where umbrellas have been left in hallways soaking wet leaving floors slippery
Whist accidents are inevitable in some situations many are preventable. The highways agency for example should ensure main roads and motorways are gritted when ice and snow is forecasted. Councils should do the same in areas that receive lots of public visitors, public car parks and playgrounds for example. Business owners are responsible for ensuring the safety of both their staff and customers and must ensure their premises are checked to make sure there are no risks.
