Child Abuse Compensation

Child abuse is sadly something that has been happening for years. In many instances it happens within the child’s own family home by a family member. In other cases it has happened in care homes, schools or religious organisations. Whether the abuse was mental, physical, sexual or verbal it can affect the child throughout their life leaving scars that will never heal.

In England and Wales approximately one child a week dies from some form of physical abuse. There are around 30,000 children on child protection registers currently. When social services staff are worried that a child could be at risk of any kind of abuse the child’s name is placed on the register.

There are four main types of child abuse:

1. Emotional – This is when parents fail to show any love and affection to a child. This could include threats, criticism or sarcasm, shouting and taunting the child. The effects are very serious and will last a long time.

2. Physical – If the parents or any other adult deliberately hurt a child, or don’t do anything to prevent it. Giving children drugs or alcohol also comes under this heading. The most serious cases can result in the death of a child.

3. Neglect – This is when a child's basic needs for food, warmth, clothing or medical attention are not met by the parents. Children that are neglected may be aggressive or appear very withdrawn. Some may find it difficult to cope at school.

4. Sexual – This is when a child is used by an adult or older child for sexual gratification. Forcing a child to carry out sexual acts, or showing children adult pornographic DVDs or magazines. Photographing children in a sexual way. The effects of sexual abuse are highly damaging.
