Q         I don’t have any physical injuries that can be seen but I have had years of psychological pressure from my ex, can I make a claim?

A         Yes you can. Emotional abuse is where the abuser inflicts emotional or mental distress by way of humiliation, fear, threat or some other verbal or non verbal manner.

Q         I feel too embarrassed to report my partner to the police as I am the man and it is my wife who is the violent one in our relationship. Will I be taken seriously?

A         Many victims of domestic violence never report it, men and women, but any assault made on a person by their partner, male or female will be taken seriously. There are several helplines who specialise in support and help for male victims of domestic violence.   The Mankind Initiative is one of those.

Q         My elderly aunt seems to be spending a lot more money each week than she used to. This has only happened since her cousin has moved in with her. I suspect he has something to do with this, is this some kind of abuse?

A         Financial abuse covers a lot of things but on the whole it means obtaining money, goods or property through deceptive or dishonest means. If this person is obtaining money from your aunt this way then yes it is financial abuse and your aunt could make a claim.

Q         My granddad is in a care home and I feel he is being neglected a lot as when I saw him last week he said he hadn’t had a bath in 2 weeks. Is neglect a form of abuse and can he make a claim for neglect?

A         Negligence could also be described as carelessness. When there is negligence in a nursing or care home and a resident becomes ill or gets hurt
