Sexual Abuse Compensation
Sexual abuse can happen to children and adults, men and women. In all cases it is a very traumatic experience for the victims who need a lot of support in helping to rebuild their lives.
The UK Government estimates that there are around 200,000 serious sexual assaults and almost 50,000 rapes or attempted rapes each year.
The effects of sexual abuse on victims can include: depression, low self esteem, eating disorders, anxiety, anger, feeling isolated and much more. It’s not just the victim that is affected, their family and friends can be too. The psychological effects can lead to problems in relationships be it partner, friend or family member.
Rape, Incest, Sexual Assault are all sensitive subjects, so it’s understandable why most victims find it difficult to talk about what they’ve been through. The abuser can make victims feel responsible, guilty or under threat, which is why so many sexual abuse crimes never get reported. Even if they do get reported, the victim wants closure as soon as possible as they don’t want to talk about it. Because of this they are not getting the counselling they need or receiving the compensation they are due.
The amount of compensation will depend upon the frequency and severity of the abuse, also the age of the victim.
The CICA (criminal injuries compensation authority) is a government scheme that awards compensation to victims of violent or sexual crimes. To qualify for this the crime must have been reported to the police.
