What Is Pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is caused by a defect with the placenta, which is carrying oxygen and important nutrients to the baby. For the mother, it causes high blood pressure and sometimes fits - if it's really severe it can also lead to liver problems, kidney failure or even a stroke. For the unborn baby, pre-eclampsia can cause growth problems, premature birth and stillbirth.
You are at the highest risk if any of the following apply:

  • You have suffered from pre-eclampsia in an earlier pregnancy
  • You are carrying twins
  • There has been a long interval since your last pregnancy (more than 10 years)
  • You are aged over 40
  • You have diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure outside of your pregnancy
  • You are very overweight
