Causes and effects of hospital acquired infections
Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) are infections which are contracted while in hospital, 48 hours or more after admission, rather than infections which may have been incubating before admission. Although the elderly are most at risk of infection, anybody can be susceptible. Contracting an illness such as MRSA can at best slow your recovery, keeping you in hospital for longer, and at worst can risk your recovery entirely – or be fatal.
Causes include:
- Hospital staff not cleaning their hands thoroughly
- Staff not having enough time to thoroughly clean beds between patients
- Overcrowded wards that cannot be cleaned effectively
- Contaminated medical devices such as ventilators, syringes or catheters
There are quite a wide variety of hospital acquired infections which can have a very serious effect on a patient's recovery. Precision Claims can help you make a claim for compensation if you have been unfortunate enough to suffer from a hospital acquired infection. Claims can include the suffering you have had, the extended recovery period needed and any loss of earnings you may have had.
